Background
Following an invitation from Transport for NSW (TfNSW), Randwick City Council successfully applied for funding to improve pedestrian safety at 29 locations near local schools.
The projects will be undertaken throughout 2021 and 2022 as part of a $4.375M grant recently awarded to Council under the Federal Stimulus Road Safety Program School Zones project.
The project involves upgrading pedestrian crossings to raised 'wombat' crossings, installing pedestrian refuge islands and the installation of signalised intersections at an accident blackspot location on Anzac Parade.
Wombat crossings are like zebra crossings but are built upon a raised platform. This makes them more conspicuous and reduces the speed of vehicles traversing the crossing.
Research has shown that wombat crossings substantially lower the potential for fatal or serious injuries to pedestrians.

| Raised pedestrian crossingsRaised pedestrian crossings are located where there are high levels of pedestrian activity. They are raised to increase visibility for approaching drivers and slow down traffic. Pedestrian facilities on local and regional roads are installed by councils and on state roads by RMS. |
