WIRES - Wildlife Information and Rescue Service

Project snapshot

WIRES Project Concept

Background

Volunteer organisation Wildlife Information and Rescue Services (WIRES) has been utilising a small area on the edge of Randwick Environment Park (REP) for the care and rehabilitation of rescued birds and mammals with the support of Randwick Council for more than two decades.

The existing facility has evolved over time, and in an ad-hoc fashion, and consists of a number of small pens and aviaries.  The facility has deteriorated and now needs substantial attention to meet current standards for the work health and safety needs of its volunteers, and for the care and rehabilitation of the injured wildlife.

Key features

As the existing facility is not well-placed within the sensitive Environment Park, a new facility will be built, on the adjacent Randwick Community Centre lott. The new asset will not only be custom-built for WIRES, but also provide an opportunity for community education through interpretive signage and information about Randwick’s local birds and fauna.

Site Location
The proposed development will include:
  • 8 Possum pens: 4m x 4m x 2.4m (h) with 3 cages having access doors at either end which would allow flexibility into converting them to smaller cages to accommodate smaller animal species if required at various times.
  • 2 Bird cages: 3m x 2m x2.4 (h)
  • 1 Flight aviary: 10m x 4m x 4m (h)
  • Staff lunch / breakout area, along with animal food preparation area: min 4m x 4m
  • Store – animal food, equipment
  • Bin storage
  • Interpretive signage and information about Randwick’s local birds and fauna

Project  Scope and Timeline

  • To demolish and remove existing structure within the Randwick Environment Park (REP);
  • To build a new wildlife rescue facility adjacent to its existing location within Munda Reserve Randwick.

The project is set to commence in the beginning of April 2024 and has its construction phase estimated in 8 months, weather permitting.
