Background

Following extensive consultation with key stakeholders and the local community, as well as detailed site analysis, the Clovelly Road Precinct Streetscape Master Plan was adopted by Randwick City Council on 26 May 2020. A new pocket park at the intersection of Clovelly & Carrington Roads was identified as one of seven key priority projects as part of the Clovelly Road Precinct Streetscape Masterplan.

The proposed works will transform the existing slip lane and underutilised median island into a valuable community asset that will promote social interaction, improved pedestrian connectivity and increased tree canopy cover, without negative impacts to traffic, parking and the local centre.

Designing with the community

Guided by community feedback, the Concept responds to the importance that the community placed on "greening" Clovelly road and prioritising pedestrian experience - a top priority from the Clovelly Road Masterplan Consultation, which underpins this project.

A space characterised by greenery, that utilises high quality design to bring local residents together is the community vision to which this concept has responded.  The concept acknowledges the value that the community places on retaining parking and minimising traffic congestion, whilst delivering this unique space, and embraces the findings of the traffic studies to develop innovative approaches to minimising compromise.

Key features

Following consultation with the local users of the area, we have designed a plaza with the key features below:

  • Green pocket park to create a village atmosphere;
  • Increased trees and greenery across the whole intersection;
  • Seating encouraging passers by to stop, enjoy a morning coffee and connect with nature;
  • A communal gathering space to connect with neighbours;
  • Strategic timed parking to ensure easy access to local businesses;
  • Pleasant night time decorative lighting;
  • Greater separation between pedestrian and cars to increase safety;
  • A multipurpose deck area that can function as a versatile community space.
