Lost & found animals

If you lose or find a pet

If you have lost your pet contact Council's Call Centre on 1300 722 542 and provide a detailed description of your missing pet, including breed, colour, gender, whether your pet is wearing a collar and microchip details. If your pet has a microchip and Council has your current details, then if your pet is collected by Council it can be easily reunited with you.

If you are not contactable then your pet will be taken to the Sydney Dogs and Cats Home at 77 Edward Street, Carlton - phone 9587 9611.

If an impounded dog or cat is microchipped, the Sydney Dogs and Cats Home will care for your pet at the shelter for 14 days while they try to contact you.

If the animal is not microchipped, your pet will be held for seven (7) days only by the Sydney Dogs and Cats Home.

Animals whose owner cannot be found will be re-homed, if suitable.

It is recommended that you regularly contact the Sydney Dogs and Cats Home to check if your pet has been transferred there. You may also check the Sydney Dogs and Cats Home website or visit the shelter in person.

You are also advised to contact local vets (see list below) to report your missing pet.

Collecting from the Sydney Dogs and Cats Home

To collect a pet you must provide identification or a letter of authority from the owner. All dogs and cats must be microchipped and registered before they will be released from the shelter.

You will also have to pay pound fees, which includes the cost of food.

In some cases, owners may also be issued a fine by Council if there has been a breach of the Companion Animals Act 1998.

If you have found a pet

Contact Council's Call Centre on 1300 722 542 between 8.30am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.

If you find a dead animal

To report dead animals on public property please contact Council's Call Centre 1300 722 542 and Council will remove them. Rangers will scan dogs and cats for microchip identification so that owners can be notified.

For reasons of public health we dispose of animals immediately and they cannot be recovered by owners.

Council does not remove dead animals from private property. Contact your local vet for assistance, if needed.
