Weed spraying

Managing weeds in parks, sports fields and public places

Randwick City Council operates regular weed spraying programs to control the growth and spread of weeds in our parks, sports fields and public places.

Weeds can damage and reduce the effectiveness of public infrastructure such as roads, gutters and footpaths. In parks and sports fields, they can affect and reduce the growth of healthy turf for playing surfaces as well as being unpleasant and painful to walk on.

Street weed spraying program

Council  undertakes a monthly and as-needed street spraying program targeting town centres, main roads, coastal reserves and promenades and high visibility areas. This program involves using a knockdown herbicide and preemergent herbicide (Exonerate and Galigan) which work together to kill weeds and slow their regrowth.

The chemicals are applied directly to the weed either through a backpack mounted or handheld sprayer. A cone is fitted to the nozzle to reduce spray drift and staff wear protective equipment as a safety precaution.

Request an area to be sprayed

If you know of an area where weeds are growing, please use our request form to let us know so we can schedule our staff to attend.

Park and sports field spraying program

We routinely spray for weeds in parks and sports fields using a broadscale spraying program. This involves spraying a selective herbicide from a boom sprayer fitted to a vehicle to the entire area. The herbicide targets weeds like bindi and winter grasses.

Council notifies its intention to spray the area on this webpage and by installing temporary signage in the area.
