Clovelly Beach Upgrades

Background

Randwick City Council is dedicated to improving public facilities for the community. This project responds to the community's request for improved access to the Geoff James Pool (Clovelly Ocean Pool) along with improved facilities for Clovelly Lifeguards following the recent change to year-round patrols at Clovelly.

What’s Planned?

Clovelly Pool Access Improvement

The project aims to enhance pool accessibility with a new accessible stair access, located at the southeast corner of the pool, incorporating safety and convenience for pool users.

The works will involve the closure of the pool for the duration of the works to undertake the following activities. Remove a section of the east pool wall and build new pool walls to accommodate a new staircase and landing. Installation of handrail and pedestrian balustrade. Coating of new walls and steps.

Clovelly Lifeguards Facility

The existing Lifeguard facility is a temporary tower that is only 7m2 and does not have any power or data facilities to assist with maintaining a comfortable work environment.

A new lifeguard’s facility is planned in the same location to provide better facilities for the lifeguards that are now patrolling Clovelly Beach year-round between sunrise and sunset. The new facility will provide a larger area with better views and technology to ensure the best outcome for the community.

A specially fabricated container will be used as the main facility for the lifeguards which will be elevated onsite with an accompanying deck and stairs to ensure the best view for patrolling Clovelly. There will also be additional storage for equipment under the container.

Clovelly will continue to be monitored during construction with the current facility temporarily relocated to the east during construction before been relocated to Little Bay to improve the amenities at this seasonally patrolled beach for the lifeguards.

October Update - Clovelly Pool

Current Progress

  • The new accessible stairs have now been successfully installed.
  • All balustrades and handrails have been successfully installed.

Upcoming Works

  • The final resurfacing of the stairs using Vinylester Fibre Resin has proven more complex than expected. The gel coat for this resin requires about seven days of warm conditions to cure effectively.
  • Resurfacing works are scheduled to commence during the week of the 22nd of September and be completed by late October. This schedule has been selected to ensure optimal weather and curing conditions, but please be aware that final timings will still depend on favourable tide, swell, and weather.
  • To accelerate the completion of project from Monday 13th October works will be taking place between the extended hours of 5am to 8pm to complete the pool resurfacing works.
