Stage 2

Randwick City Council is continuing streetscape upgrade works in the Matraville Town Centre to improve the amenity and appearance of the area. The upcoming works will take place along the western side of Bunnerong Road, between Perry Street and Daunt Avenue. Improvements will include an upgraded footpath, street trees and plantings, and seating. This stage follows upgrades completed in mid-2024 along the western side of Bunnerong Road from Beauchamp Road to Daunt Avenue.

Project Background

Randwick City Council developed a public domain masterplan in 2022 and 2023 to guide the long-term vision for the Matraville Town Centre. The plan was developed through consultation with local residents and businesses and aim to create a distinctive town centre with gathering spaces and welcoming gateways, more outdoor dining and opportunities for community events. The streetscape upgrade works being undertaken by Council are consistent with the short-term actions from the masterplan and will pave the way for future improvements.

What’s Planned?

The streetscape upgrade will enhance the look and feel of the public space and support local businesses through high-quality design and improved public infrastructure. These works form part of Council’s broader strategic vision for the town centre.

Scope of works includes:

• Removal of the existing footpath and installation of a new asphalt footpath to match the 2024 upgrade
• Landscaping upgrades – including new native plantings and advanced trees
• New public seating
• Minor civil works and repairs

Construction will be staged to minimise disruption.

What to expect during construction?

• Working hours: Works will occur both during the day (7am–5pm) and at night (7pm–5am). Night works will focus on lower-impact activities to reduce disturbance to residents.
• Traffic and parking: Traffic control and signage will help manage vehicle flow around the work zone. Temporary removal of sections of the northbound parking lane on Bunnerong Road will be required.
• Pedestrian access: Footpath access will be limited in work zones. Traffic controllers will be onsite to guide pedestrians safely around the area.
• Bus stop changes: The bus stop in the area will be temporarily relocated during the works. Signage and traffic controllers will be in place to assist passengers.

• Construction start: Monday 21 July 2025
• Expected completion: Late December 2025 (weather permitting)
