Maroubra Junction Streetscape Upgrade

Stage 1

Randwick Council is upgrading the streetscape in Maroubra Junction.  The works will improve the visual appearance of the area with new paving, trees, seats and street furniture resulting in a more vibrant and people-friendly space. Work will take place along the western side of Anzac Parade, between Maroubra Road and Boyce Road.

Project Background

In 2023, Council consulted with the community to develop a long-term strategic vision for the Maroubra Junction Town Centre. The resulting Maroubra Junction Town Centre Masterplan provides a framework for public space improvements and supports the future growth of the Eastgardens to Maroubra Junction Strategic Centre. It aims to deliver a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly town centre by identifying opportunities to boost economic activity, enhance public amenity, and strengthen the area’s character.

What’s Planned?

The streetscape upgrade is designed to improve pedestrian safety, enhance the look and feel of the public domain, and support local business activity through high-quality design and upgraded public infrastructure. These works also form part of Council’s broader strategic vision for the precinct.

Scope of works includes:

  • Removal of existing concrete and paved surfaces and installation of new pavement
  • Paving upgrade in alignment with Town Centre Master Plan
  • New seating and street furniture
  • Landscaping and greenery improvements – Including in ground and raised planters, with native planting and advanced trees.
  • Other minor civil works

Works will be carried out in sections to minimise disruption, as shown below:

What to expect during construction?

  • Working hours: A mix of day and night works is required. Noisy construction will be limited to a maximum of three nights per week, typically between 7pm and 11pm, in accordance with Transport for NSW road occupancy licence conditions.
  • Parking and traffic changes: Temporary removal of the northbound parking lane on Anzac Parade may occur. A minor site compound will be established within the median car park. Traffic management and pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.
  • Business access: We’ll work closely with local businesses to minimise disruption during trading hours. Temporary pedestrian detours may be needed, but access to shops will be maintained where possible.
  • Traffic management: Signage and temporary traffic calming measures will be in place to ensure safety for the community and workers.
  • Environmental controls: Measures to minimise noise, dust, and erosion will be in place throughout the works, including vibration monitoring.
  • Bus stops: The bus stop will be temporarily relocated during works, with clear signage in place to guide passengers. Staff will be on site to assist with safe and smooth pedestrian access to and from buses.

We understand that construction may cause temporary inconvenience, and we thank you for your patience. Council is committed to completing the project efficiently while maintaining safety and reducing impacts on residents, businesses, and visitors.
