Support given to Blak Markets

Council agreed to contribute $45,000 in funding to the not-for-profit group First Hand Solutions Aboriginal Corporation over the next 18 months to support the continued growth of the popular Blak Markets. The market is held quarterly on Bare Island, La Perouse and provides economic development opportunities to local Indigenous people by creating the opportunity to sell original and affordable Aboriginal artworks, handicrafts, homewares and jewellery.

Rabbitohs new home one step closer

The South Sydney Rabbitohs and its community outreach arm, Souths Cares, is one step closer to calling Maroubra home. Council agreed to finalise a lease arrangement for Souths to use a proposed Community and High Performance Centre to be built on the Bunnerong Road side of Heffron Park. The Centre will be funded by the Rabbitohs and grants from all three levels of government. Council is also building a community gymnastics centre and indoor sports centre which will be incorporated into the same building. The proposed design will be subject to community consultation.

Sima Truuvert Planning Scholarship established

Councillors took time to acknowledge the great work and impact of former Director of Planning, Sima Truuvert, who passed away on 17 January 2019. In her memory, Council has established the Sima Truuvert Planning Scholarship, which aims to inspire and encourage the planners of tomorrow. It is open to student planners and graduates and provides a 12-month paid work placement and a $5,000 HECS contribution. Applications are currently being sought for the scholarship and are open until 12 March 2019.

Clearing driveway obstructions

Council will write to the NSW Minister for Local Government, the Hon. Gabrielle Upton and the NSW Minister for Roads, the Hon. Melinda Pavey and Local Government NSW requesting that the State Government investigate measures and strategies to help facilitate Council in the removal of vehicles that are obstructing a driveway.

Request for metro plans

A recent article in the Sydney Morning Herald revealed the existence of plans for an eastern extension of the Sydney Metro West line, including options for a line to Malabar via Randwick. Council will request that all documents and plans for the Sydney Metro West line, including the strategic options for the eastern extension, be released to the public.
