Randwick City Councillors met last night Tuesday 23 March 2021. On the agenda for discussion were local upgrade projects, outdoor events for Anzac Day and community grants.

Anzac Dawn Service returns for 2021
Coogee Beach’s iconic and moving Anzac Dawn Service will return this year with a COVID safe event planned for April 25. The ticketed event will be limited to 3,000 seated attendees. Priority seating allocations will be given to current former servicemen and women. More details to be released soon. [See related story]

Matraville Youth and Cultural Hall concept adopted
A concept design for a new community hall on Knowles Avenue in Matraville will proceed to public exhibition and development application stage after Councillors approved the concept. The $4.7M project will see a new hall with a generous covered forecourt, new accessible toilets, new kitchen and improved ventilation and lighting.

Refurbishment plans for La Perouse Headland toilets

A public toilet block in La Perouse with arguably the best coastal view in Sydney, will be refurbished as part of a Randwick City Council upgrade. The facilities located near Cann Park at the entry track to Congwong Beach, will be upgraded to provide modern accessible toilet facilities, outdoor showers, seating and bike racks and a green roof with native plantings. The plans will proceed to community consultation as part of the development application stage.

Council seeks Federal infrastructure funding
Randwick Council is seeking more than $5M in Federal funding to deliver some local improvement projects as part of the Local Roads & Community Infrastructure Program. The funds would be used for new amenities and landscaping at Paine Reserve, a synthetic sports field at Coral Sea Park, new decking at Malabar and Mahon Pools, footpath upgrades and landscaping at Frenchmans Bay.

Community grants awarded
Twenty community groups in Randwick City will receive just over $100,000 in cash grants and in kind support as part of the latest round of Council’s Community Creative and Community Connect funding streams. The funded projects include a sustainability mural by Malabar Public School, creative thinking and storytelling art workshops and a National Costume Exhibition as part of the 2021 Greek Festival. Other supported community groups include Karitane, WIRES, Souths Cares and the Men’s Table.
