Randwick residents are sure to be bowled over with the number of free, family activities planned for the Australia Day celebrations at Arthur Bryne Reserve, Maroubra starting at noon on Saturday 26 January.

“This will be a day we can celebrate many of the things we love about Australia – the great outdoors, coming together to celebrate as one, recognising the contributions of the people who care for our community and, of course, lamingtons,” said Acting Randwick Mayor Danny Said.

“I encourage everyone to mark the day in a way that is right for them, and of course I hope that means joining us for a welcoming and inclusive event that will be fun for people of all ages, interests and backgrounds.”

Budding bakers can don their aprons and chef’s hats before a session of lamington making. The sponge cake, coated in chocolate and coconut, has long been regarded as a national icon and will go down a treat with desert-lovers both big and small.

Residents can burn off the excess energy caused by a lamington-induced sugar rush with a community game of backyard cricket or jump on board the mechanical surfboard to ride a wave or two while safely remaining on land.

For a more sedate change of pace, reptile-loving kids will be entertained by the live reptile show, which will hold two sessions throughout the afternoon, one at 12pm and another at 2pm, while crafty kids can put their skills to use designing their own sunsafe cap.

No matter where families situate themselves throughout the afternoon, they’ll be kept entertained thanks to the Roos on Stilts and a roving band of musicians. Food trucks will also be available.

Earlier in the day, Randwick Mayor Kathy Neilson will welcome the community’s newest arrivals as they become Australian citizens and will also recognise local residents who have contributed to Randwick City with the presentation of the Australia Day Community Service Awards.
