Today we kicked off a week of free activities to celebrate the reopening of the Matraville Youth and Cultural Hall!

Replacing the original building – which was largely unchanged since completed in the late 1950s – the new, sustainably designed building features a new multi-purpose hall, covered outdoor area, accessible kitchen and bathroom facilities and landscaped grounds.

I am thrilled to invite residents of Matraville and surrounding suburbs to get acquainted with this wonderful new space. From DJ workshops for kids and teenagers, to Zumba classes or K-Pop workshops, there is something for everyone.

Book now to secure your spots! I hope you will also join me for the official opening event on Saturday 11 May from 11.30am, featuring a smoking ceremony by Gamay Dancers, and an artist talk with Kamilaroi/Gamilaraay artist Dennis Golding.

I was honoured to speak at Randwick Netball Association’s event on Saturday, to mark the launch of the 2024 season.

Netball is the largest women’s sport in Australia, and the number one biggest sport in our local government area. Randwick Netball Association is the fourth largest association in NSW, with more than 4500 members. It attracts an extraordinary 10,000 people to Heffron Park every Saturday to cheer their favourite players along.

Sport is important to the health and wellbeing of individuals, but it also plays a vital role in building and sustaining strong communities. That’s why I am proud of Council’s ongoing support of netball in our area through improvements to Heffron Park, including a $2m shade structure to allow more all-weather games, and new $1.75m female-friendly amenities and storage facilities adjacent to courts.

Finally, I would like to wish all of the mothers and grandmothers in our city a very happy Mother's Day. Thank you for all you do for your families, your community, and for making our city such a caring and welcoming place for us all. I hope you have a wonderful day out-and-about in our beautiful city this Sunday!
