An upgrade will see this tired area of Maroubra Junction transformed into a vibrant, green space for the community to enjoy.

Construction has commenced on a new $1M upgrade at Maroubra Junction to clean up the town centre by creating a new vibrant and green public place for locals and shoppers to gather and enjoy, Randwick Mayor Dylan Parker announced today, 14 September 2022.

"After consulting with our community, what Council has overwhelmingly heard is that there is a strong desire to improve the experience of public spaces around Maroubra Junction. This project is the beginning of our journey to improve the entire town centre,” says Mayor Parker.

“Maroubra Junction is a bustling centre but sections are tired, uninviting and in need of a makeover. This project is a first step towards cleaning up the area by creating a greener and more inviting space for everyone across our community to enjoy.”

A new seating area will be constructed with new paving, picnic tables, lighting and bike racks for public use. More than 1000 new plants inspired by the coastal character of Maroubra will be planted.

Low water-use, predominately native plants have been chosen for the area, including shrubs, groundcovers, grasses, trees and some feature plants. The new greenery will provide habitat for local birds, butterflies and bees.

The work is being conducted in two stages.

Planting will begin in September 2022 and take six to eight weeks to complete. The project will take a short break over the busy summer and Christmas period, with work on construction of the central plaza beginning in early 2023.

The upgrade is made possible thanks to a grant from the NSW Government Your High Street grant program, which was created to support councils across NSW to make permanent improvements to the amenity and functionality of their high streets.
