Lifeguards have closed Frenchman’s Beach at La Perouse this morning as a precaution following an oil spill in the area.

The spill appears to be locally contained and the source is unknown. Council staff are cleaning the beach and NSW Ports are helping with the cleanup. Signs have been installed at the beach advising people not to swim. An investigation is underway.

10:35am 7 April UPDATE: Council has received confirmation that an algal bloom caused a discolouration in the water at Frenchmans Beach in La Perouse yesterday. It is considered harmless and has been known to bloom in Sydney coastal waters.
