Randwick City Council is supporting a campaign to increase pedestrian safety by placing prominent decals in high risk urban streets, reminding pedestrians to ‘Look Out Before You Step Out’.
The Roads and Maritime Services campaign targets metropolitan areas with high pedestrian activity, and aims to educate people to be mindful when crossing roads and to not be distracted by other people, events or handheld devices.
Stickers have been placed at pedestrian crossings in Belmore Road, Short Street, Silver Street, Arthur Street, Avoca Street and High Street.
The campaign roll-out comes following research from RMS that 15.7% of casualties in the Randwick area are pedestrians. This is compared to 7.9% in the Sydney CBD area.
The Look Out Before You Step Out campaign reminds pedestrians to:
- Make eye contact with the driver
- Unplug from devices such as mobile phones
- Don’t walk between parked cars
- Never assume a driver has seen you
- Check for turning vehicles from all directions at intersections
- Wear bright clothing to ensure you are visible
Mayor Noel D’Souza said: “With traffic changes due to light rail construction happening across the Randwick City area, it’s more important than ever for pedestrians to unplug from handheld devices and be mindful before they step out into a busy street.
“With bright decals positioned in high footfall areas, we hope that this campaign will be eye-catching and prompt residents and visitors to think about their actions when crossing the road.”
