Randwick Mayor Scott Nash has today welcomed feedback from Transport for NSW that they will consider amending the design of the proposed High Cross Park light rail interchange in Randwick.

"I must stress that Council's first preference remains that we believe the interchange should be located on High Street with a stop to service the hospitals rather than in High Cross Park.

"We have supported this position for some time and believe it's a better solution and would retain an important green space in Randwick.

"However, we have been told – in no uncertain terms – that Transport will not consider any alternative option to the High Cross Park location.

"Because of this, Council has provided feedback to Transport that if the interchange is to remain in High Cross Park, that it should be amended to get the best outcome for our community.

"Our suggested changes include making High Cross Park a paved plaza area with pockets of grassed area, undergrounding an electrical substation and co-locating a toilet block for bus drivers with the light rail interchange.

"I understand that Transport is happy to consider these design changes and I welcome ongoing cooperative discussions to get the best outcome for our residents, businesses, visitors and workers.

"I also welcome Transport's commitment this week that access will be retained at all times during construction to the war memorial located in High Cross Park.

"We welcome the introduction of light rail in Randwick City and I commend the Government on funding this project.

"I think this is a great project. Getting light rail is a nine out of ten. We want to make sure light rail is a 10 out of 10 by making changes to help our residents," Mayor Nash said.
