Randwick City Council is urging community members to take care while crossing roads, as part of a pedestrian safety campaign targeting accident hotspots in the Local Government Area (LGA).

Bright yellow ‘look before you cross’ signs have been painted on roads at 15 intersections identified as hotspots for pedestrian accidents, and at a merging intersection on the border of Randwick and Maroubra where many residents have expressed concerns about safety.

The introduction of new signage is part of a wider Transport for NSW safety campaign. It comes after 269 pedestrian accidents – including 135 casualties – were recorded between 2019 and 2023 across Randwick City, according to the latest Transport for NSW data.

There were 62 crashes involving pedestrians, including 55 casualties, around Maroubra Junction, making the town centre the most dangerous spot for accidents.

Randwick Deputy Mayor, Councillor Clare Willington, said road safety was everyone’s responsibility and reinforced the need for all road users to take care and look out for one another. “Every life matters,” Councillor Willington said. “Whether you’re walking, riding, or driving, we all share the responsibility to make our roads safer.”

Councillor Willington said Council was working hard to reverse the growing number of incidents and was continuing to install critical road infrastructure such as pedestrian crossings and refuges, as well as speed cushions and speed humps in problem areas. Council also runs pedestrian safety workshops for residents.

“Randwick Council is committed to ensuring the safety of all road users,” Councillor Willington said. “We will continue to upgrade our roads to improve safety, but real change comes when people slow down, pay attention, and look out for one other.”
