Construction of new stairs to the Geoff James Pool (Clovelly Ocean Pool) began this week following requests from community members for improved access to the much-loved facility.

The stairs, located at the southeast corner of the pool, will provide users with safer and more convenient access.

Clovelly Ocean Pool will be closed during the upgrades and is expected to reopen to community members when the upgrades are completed in June 2025.

Council is removing a section of the east wall of the pool, building a new wall to accommodate the staircase and landing and installing a new handrail and pedestrian balustrade.

Following last year’s announcement of year-round patrols at Clovelly Beach, planning is also underway to build a new facility for Randwick City Council Lifeguards provide them with a more suitable working environment.

The design of the new facility is currently being finalised and construction is expected to start at the end of May 2025.

The existing Lifeguard facility on the south promenade of Clovelly Beach is a seven-square-metre temporary tower without any power or data facilities. The new facility will be built at the same location, however it will provide better views of the water, more space – including storage space for rescue equipment – and power for technology.

Council Lifeguards will continue to patrol Clovelly from the existing tower during construction, which will be relocated to another area on the south promenade.
