Strengthening Youth Participation in Practice

Youth participation is not just a principle — it is a core part of effective and accountable youth work practice. This one-day training brings together youth workers from across the local area to explore how young people can be meaningfully involved in shaping programs, services, and systems. There will be a particular focus on how to support opportunities for young people experiencing social exclusion and marginalisation to have their voices heard and influence decisions in their lives.

Participants will deepen their understanding of participation rights through the lens of the United Nations and the NSW Government, while exploring key youth participation frameworks including Hart’s Ladder, Shier’s Pathways to Participation, and Lundy’s Model of Participation. The workshop will also explore youth advisory groups, youth voice mechanisms, and strategies for supporting young people’s involvement in decision-making — from individual service design through to broader systemic and community change.

Facilitator: Kate Munro

With nearly 35 years of experience across local government, NSW Government, and the non-government youth sector, Kate is a respected youth work leader specialising in youth participation, trauma-informed practice, community development, and systemic advocacy.

Kate is passionate about strengthening youth work practice and supporting services to create meaningful change alongside young people — particularly those young people navigating complex systems such as child protection, justice, homelessness, and mental health systems.
