Matraville town centre masterplan

A new community centre and town square with space for outdoor events and markets is at the centre of a 20-year vision to create a vibrant and prosperous Matraville town centre.

The Matraville Public Domain Masterplan is currently on public exhibition for community feedback. It proposes transforming the existing Baird Avenue car park into a civic plaza and community centre with parking put underground.

Randwick Mayor Dylan Parker encouraged the local community to review the plan and provide any comments or feedback.

“Matraville town centre is an important business and shopping district and well-used by locals. While the centre itself is a little tired, it has a lot of potential to be a vibrant and thriving place where people want to visit, shop and hang out,” Mayor Parker said.

The plan has been developed following extensive community consultation in 2021.

It proposes to create a distinctive town centre with gathering spaces and welcoming gateways, more outdoor dining and opportunities for community events. There will be improved tree cover and a focus on pedestrians with wider footpaths, walking connections and more dining and retail activities.

While no funding is currently allocated for the projects, the masterplan, if adopted, will provide a long-term vision and guide future funding priorities.

Highlights of the masterplan

Interested community members are invited to review the draft masterplan and to share their thoughts via Council’s Your Say Randwick website.
