Why plant local native species?

Restoring native vegetation in your garden has many benefits for you, your neighbourhood and local wildlife.

  1. Built for our coastal climate: plants native to Sydney’s eastern suburbs are naturally suited to our sandy soils, coastal winds and salty air, requiring less water
  2. Support local wildlife: Planting a mix of native flowering species helps bees find nectar year-round, birds find food and shelter and enables butterflies to complete their life cycles
  3. Help create a greener, cooler neighbourhood: Urban gardens filled with native plants connect to our local ‘green web’, improve biodiversity, help cool our streets and strengthen our local ecosystem
