Coogee Bay Road Shared Village Project

Creating community on Coogee Bay Road

Coogee Bay Road Shared Village

Removal of infrastructure and revert to two-way traffic, May 2021

The Coogee Bay Road Shared Village project was developed in response to Covid-19 social distancing regulations in order to provide more space on Coogee Bay Road for business and community use. The project involved changing the traffic flow to one way in the section of Coogee Bay Road between Arden Street and Brook Street and was installed in November 2020 for an initial trial period of 3 months.

Based on positive feedback from local businesses and community members a report was sent to the February 2021 Council Meeting with a recommendation for the project to be extended. At that meeting Council resolved to extend the project for an additional three months until the end of April 2021, after which time the project was to be discontinued and dismantled.

Following on from that Council resolution the Coogee Bay Road Shared Village project will start to be removed on Monday 3 May 2021, with two-way traffic to be re-instated from Thursday 6 May (weather permitting). The three bus services (370, 374 and X74) from Coogee to the City will also return to their route along Coogee Bay Road.

Key dates:

  • Monday 3 May 2021  – Road closure from 8.30pm – 5.00am for removal of sandstone blocks, furniture and planter boxes. Road remains one-way.
  • Tuesday 4 May 2021 – Road closure from 8.30pm – 5.00am for removal of synthetic grass and road cleaning. Road remains one-way.
  • Wednesday 5 May 2021 – Road closure from 8.30pm – 5.00am to reinstate line marking and install new signs. Road reopens to two-way traffic flow between Arden and Brook Street on Thursday 6 May.
  • Monday 10 May 2021 -  Bus services 370, 374, X74 return to normal route along Coogee Bay Road.

To assist with the reinstatement of the traffic conditions it is advised that you do not use the kerbside parking on Coogee Bay Road between Brook Street and Arden Street during the times mentioned above.

The period of change whilst we de-install the infrastructure may cause some minor disturbances, and the programmed dates are contingent on the weather. There may be some minor noise associated with these works, however every effort will be made to minimise any inconvenience to the public during the de-install.

Background

The Coogee Bay Road Shared Village project runs from 28 October 2020 to 30 April 2021. It was officially launched by Randwick Mayor Danny Said and Dr Marjorie O'Neill Member for Coogee on 10 November 2020.

The project came to life after businesses asked us for help in providing more space on Coogee Bay Road for pedestrians, shoppers and outdoor dining. We’ll also be adding grassed areas, tables and seating.

The changes will help businesses on their COVID recovery journey, and make Coogee Bay Road a better experience for locals and visitors.

We hope that the project makes Coogee Bay Road an even more pleasant space for you to enjoy and feel safe.

The initial changes and installation of infrastructure may cause some minor disturbances. We thank you in advance for your ongoing patience and understanding while we undertake these important works.

Key dates

  • 28 October 2020 - Road closure from 9pm for new line markings. These works will not be noisy.
  • 29 October 2020 - Road reopens to one-way traffic flow in a westerly (uphill) direction between Arden and Brook Street.
  • 2 - 9 November 2020 - Installation of shared space materials including small grassed areas and additional tables and chairs for local businesses.

The changes are temporary and will be implemented initially for three months and then reviewed.
