"Gallery Visits" invites you to explore renowned paintings and sculptures set in imaginary galleries, where contemporary audiences can engage with the exhibits. In this series, Stephen Kaldor features artworks that are serious, thought-provoking and downright humorous, created to prompt thought and reflection.
The concept for this series emerged during the COVID lockdown, a period where, despite having time on our hands, many activities remained out of reach. As an artist and art enthusiast, Stephen Kaldor longed to experience exhibitions that were either closed or limited in access. Instead, he turned to his imagination to bring these artistic visions to life.
Stephen Kaldor immigrated to Australia at 19 and studied medicine at the University of Sydney, practicing as a suburban GP for many years. It was only after retiring from his medical career that he was able to dedicate himself fully to his true passion: art. From 1971 to 1974, Stephen studied at the National Art School in Darlinghurst, where he developed his craft as a figurative realist painter, focusing on Australian landscapes, still life, portraits, and art historical themes.
Stephen has participated in several prestigious art competitions, including the Archibald, Sulman, and Doug Moran prizes, where he has been a finalist on multiple occasions. He has also entered the Blake Prize eight times and has earned various accolades over the years. Stephen's paintings have been exhibited throughout Australia and have reached international audiences, showcased in the USA, Taiwan, and Italy. His work is held in both private and public collections in Australia and around the world.
