English conversation classes
English classes for migrants
Randwick City Library provides English Conversation classes for people wishing to improve their English language skills. Migrants from all non-English speaking backgrounds are welcome to attend classes. This is a great way to meet new people and help you feel part of the community.
Everyone is welcome to register, however, if demand is high, priority for bookings will be given to residents of the Local Government Area. Alternatively, the Federal Government also has a scheme called the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) which runs courses across the country. Local AMEP classes are provided by TAFE NSW Randwick College

English proficiency levels
We offer English classes for three skill levels: Beginner, Elementary and Intermediate. The below information helps understand the differences and can be used to determine which class level suits you.
| Level | Proficiency in Speaking English |
|---|---|
| Beginner | You can use simple words or phrases, for example to describe where you live and people you know. You can understand simple questions and instructions and follow short directions. You can understand numbers, prices and times. |
| Pre-Intermediate | You have sufficient vocabulary to take part in everyday discussion involving familiar situations and topics. You can use a series of phrases and sentences to describe in simple terms, for example your family and other people, living conditions, your educational background and your current or past job. You can use simple techniques to start, maintain, or end a short turn in conversation. |
| Intermediate | You have sufficient vocabulary to express yourself on topics such as hobbies and interests, work, travel, and current events. You can express the main point you want to make comprehensibly with reasonable precision. You can communicate with reasonable accuracy in familiar contexts; generally good control though with noticeable mother tongue influence. Errors are fine, but it is clear what you are trying to express. |
