Background
As part of Council’s continued effort to provide and deliver more access to free, outdoor recreation opportunities for the community, Council is building a new outdoor gym at Snape Park. Regardless of your fitness level or abilities, the gym is designed to meet everyone's needs.
At a minimum, Parks and Leisure Australia indicate a benchmark of 1 outdoor fitness station per 15,000 people. Based on the Randwick City Open Space and Recreation Needs Study 2020, outdoor gym is under supply in Maroubra area. Therefore, Snape park outdoor gym was proposed.
Key Features
The Randwick City Open Space and Recreation Needs Study indicate that a mix of static and dynamic fitness equipment to enable a diversity of fitness abilities to participate is the preference of the community. The project includes footpath and garden bed eding, rubber soft fall and miscellaneous landscape works with mixed fitness equipment including:
- Challenge Station (includes gorilla bars, body dips, leg raisers, roman rings and pull ups)
- Pull downs
- Leg press
- Elliptical Trainer
- Step-up station
- Aerobic cycle
- Dexterity builder
- Body dips
- Leg raisers
- Gorilla Bars
- Pull up bars
In addition to the above play equipment, a walking track around the perimeter of the gym with distance markings will be built. The track can be used by older gym users to test how far they can walk in 6 minutes and use the track regularly to increase their walking distance.
Construction
Construction work will commence on the week of the Monday, 15th December 2022. Due to Christmas 2022 / New Year 2023 shutdown period the contractor will stop working in the middle of December 2022 and return to complete the works by the end of January 2023, weather permitting.
