As part of Randwick City Council’s Cities for Tomorrow initiative, students have come together to design and construct their own sustainable furniture from donated and recyclable materials at Lionel Bowen Library's makerspace, The Third Space.

Many of these designs were shown during Randwick City Council’s Twilight Festival in 2022. They were featured alongside a central cardboard sculpture that drew its design from the banksia - inspired by the 3.6 hectares of critically endangered Eastern Suburbs Banksia Scrub within the Randwick Environment Park. Throughout the two-day festival, attendees were encouraged to add to the design and learn about sustainable building practices.

This exhibition shows the design processes from raw materials to functional items, and recordings can be activated by motion sensors when approaching the designs, broadcasting voices of the students allowing visitors to hear their many ideas for a sustainable and progressive model of our future cities and the many challenges ahead.

Cities for Tomorrow is a shared initiative between Randwick City Council’s Sustainability and Library sectors. All building material waste were repurposed by council with a selection of designs to be kept at Lionel Bowen Library.
