Lionel and Claire raised their large family in Kensington and were steadfast advocates of social justice and the value of education, but particularly literacy.  During Lionel Bowen’s first term as the Mayor of Randwick, he laid the foundation stone of the first free public library in Randwick Municipality in June 1951.

With Claire’s support, Lionel had a long and illustrious career in three levels of government of over 40 years. Lionel served in Gough Whitlam’s Cabinet in the early 1970s and later as Bob Hawke’s Attorney-General (1984-1990) & Deputy Prime Minister (1983-1990) in the Hawke government. Lionel Bowen holds the record as the youngest ever Mayor of Randwick. He was Mayor in 1951 and 1955.

Tony Bowen followed his late father’s footsteps, both in the law, and also being elected Mayor of Randwick in 2012. Tony retired from service as a Randwick Councillor at the 2021 local government elections. He continues to practice as a Barrister.
