Thank you to all who provided feedback on the Maroubra Road, Mons Ave and Cooper St revised design. The outcomes of the consultation were presented at the Ordinary Council Meeting on 23 June 2020. As a result, no adjustments will be made to the Maroubra Road / Mons Avenue / Cooper Street intersection, at this time. Read more in Latest News.

The intersection of Maroubra Road, Mons Avenue and Cooper Street, Maroubra is being upgraded to improve the safety of the intersection for all who use it; pedestrians, cyclists, motorists and buses.

Late last year, Council began works on the intersection, but these were paused due to community concern. On 14 April 2020, the Randwick Traffic Committee approved a revised design which is now on exhibition.

The revised design has taken into consideration feedback from the community and incorporates the following key safety improvements:

  • A new raised median and pedestrian refuge island and new kerbing on Mons Ave for pedestrian safety
  • Introduction of line-marked angle parking on Mons Ave
  • Shifting the Give Way lines forward on Mons Ave and Cooper St to improve sight-lines for motorists
  • New pedestrian refuge on Maroubra Rd and new kerb ramps onto Mons Ave and Cooper St for pedestrian safety
  • Provision on Mons Avenue for vehicles turning left onto Maroubra Road to fit when other vehicles may be turning right or going straight ahead.

Thank you to all who contributed to our consultation regarding the Maroubra Road, Mons Ave and Cooper St revised design. The outcomes of the consultation were presented at the Ordinary Council Meeting on 23 June 2020. At this meeting, the Council resolved (Andrews/Stavrinos) that:

    a) the Council not proceed with any adjustments to the Maroubra Road / Mons Avenue / Cooper Street intersection, at this stage, and

    b) the Maroubra Road/ Mons Avenue/ Cooper Street intersection be carefully considered within the upcoming strategic route study of Maroubra Road, from Bunnerong Road to Malabar Road, Maroubra.

As a result, no adjustments will be made to the Maroubra Road / Mons Avenue / Cooper Street intersection, at this time.

Instead, the intersection will be carefully considered as part of the upcoming strategic route study of Maroubra Road, taking into consideration community feedback received during the consultation.

The Maroubra Road strategic route study will examine the road safety performance of Maroubra Road, the existing and future operation of the road and conditions faced by vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists. Furthermore, it will propose changes along the route, and these will be costed and programmed into future budget considerations.

The Maroubra Road strategic route study is budgeted for in Council's 2020-21 Capital Works Program.
