Voting is compulsory in Australia and enables you to choose who represents you in federal, state and local governments. You only need to enrol once with the Australian Electoral Commission to vote for all three levels of government.

How do I enrol to vote? 

We work with the Australian Electoral Commission to make it easy for voters to enrol at federal, state and local government levels. You can enrol to vote by:

• visiting the Australian Electoral Commission website 
• completing a paper (PDF) enrolment form.

Once your enrolment is complete, you'll receive an acknowledgement advice which will cover your name as per the roll, federal electoral division, state electoral district, and local government area.

If you don't receive the advice within four weeks, you should contact the Australian Electoral Commission or call them on 13 23 26.

Who can enrol? 

You can enrol to vote if you:

• are an Australian citizen, or an eligible British subject enrolled to vote in Australia on 25 January 1984
• are 16 years of age or older (but you cannot vote until you are 18)
• have lived at your current address for at least one month.
