Consultation has concluded

The new playground was officially opened on 3 August 2022 - see our news story on the playground opening.

Randwick City Council is upgrading the playground at Coral Sea Park, Maroubra, to create a new inclusive play space where local children of all ages, abilities and cultural backgrounds can play.

The upgrade is being funded by a NSW Government grant under the Everyone Can Play program, with Randwick Council matching the funding, dollar for dollar.

HOW DID WE CONSULT?

Stage 1: We asked the community to share their ideas for the new playground design. Stage 2: We exhibited the draft concept plan for community feedback.

What we heard - stage 1:

Parents and carers want a playground with more challenging equipment for older kids to move and climb, as well as safe areas for little ones to play, all in a more natural setting. There is strong support for more inclusive play equipment, shade, and seating.

What we designed - stage 2:

We designed a playground with large multi-play equipment for bigger kids, and a log seesaw and toddler slide located next to a grassed area where parents and carers can relax while they supervise. There is also an inground wheelchair accessible carousel and basket swing. Stepping stones set amongst low plantings and more shade trees are proposed, to encourage nature play and add to the bush-style setting.

Molly's Park, the garden memorial located within the playground, will have new plantings and seating. View the concept plan.

Final design:

Based on community feedback, the concept plan was amended and the final design now includes opportunities for bigger kids to slide and swing, more sensory play for toddlers, and more seating. View the final plan.

Consultation period: Stage 2 - 19 May to 15 June 2021.

I think Coral Park needs more extensive play areas for younger toddlers who are quite adventurous but too young to play on the older equipment. Having more barriers means they are less likely to fall down from heights. Having lots of ramps and sloped areas for climbing is a lot of fun

Great asset for the people in the area. Congratulations. I hope there is a fenced off area where toddlers can run around safely, a dog area and a coffee/ refreshment cart. MT

Looks great!
A couple of suggestions
1. Kids of all ages love the net climbing frames found at Coogee Beach playground and Heffron Park
2. Cycle or scooter paths around the park providing a safe, car free area where kids can learn to ride their bikes or scoot.

Thanks for the opportunity to comment. Some changes look great and fab to see some inclusive play equipment. I would however alter a few things if possible.

1. Addition of one or two slides for older kids please (majority in the consultation report selected a large double slide as their preference).

2. Please don’t install monkey bars (please see SMH article “No more monkeying around: Push to remove dangerous play equipment). Also in the consultation report the preference was for a frame with ropes and a slide

3. More swings please. This came back very strongly in the consultation report. Chifley is a great example of having adequate swings as is the playpark at Heffron. At least two toddler and two normal would stop queues for swings and children melting down! Plus the park has the space for it

4. The consultation report had a preference for a large themed bouncer as opposed to a see saw so would be great to see this too

Thanks so much for all your work on it 😌

There are no slides for older kids, only little children. Older children only have climbing frames, they also need slides.

Would be great to include some equipment for older kids (7-10?).
