Residents aged 65 years or older, who enjoy spending time with children, are encouraged to take part in an exciting local study that brings together older adults and preschoolers in the community together in a meaningful way.

The George Institute study is looking for volunteers aged 65 years or older to spend two hours a week for 20 weeks with a child at Moverly Children’s Centre in South Coogee. A two-hour session might include light physical activity such as dance and play, and supporting children in a range of fun and creative activities. An Early Childhood Educator from Moverly will facilitate each session, which will explore a theme such as transport, animals and space.

The study aims to determine whether intergenerational programs can improve health benefits for older adults and developmental skills for young children.

Randwick Mayor Dylan Parker said: “Randwick City Council is proud to support The George Institute, a leading medical research organisation, in this exciting study that could have physical, cognitive and emotional benefits for participants.

“If you’re aged 65 years and older, becoming a ‘Grandfriend’ to a young child through this study not only supports some incredible research being undertaken but fosters connection and wellbeing in our community.”
