Randwick City Council’s FOGO program won the Environmental Leadership award in the 2022 Local Government Excellence Awards on Thursday 26 May, 2022.

Congratulations to our Waste, Sustainability, Customer Service and Communications teams, who all played a part in delivering this service to our community.

The award recognised the comprehensive community engagement and education campaign that Council delivered before, during and after the start of the FOGO waste service. It used multiple channels, with a diverse mix of behavioural change strategies, traditional marketing and digital marketing to reach a diverse community.

Randwick was the first inner city council to offer the FOGO (Food Organics and Garden Organics) waste collection. Residents have embraced FOGO and diverted more than 9000 tonnes of waste from landfill and in the process have prevented greenhouse gases from being produced, which is the equivalent of taking more than 1,800 cars off the road for an entire year.

The NSW Local Government Excellence Awards celebrate outstanding achievements and promote innovation and continuous improvement within NSW local government. Through this platform we demonstrate the excellent work being undertaken by NSW councils and showcase the work throughout the state and nationally.
