Construction on Maroubra’s newest community sporting facility the Heffron Centre is progressing well since work began in September 2021 with demolition and excavation largely complete and work now underway on the building.
Timelapse footage released by Randwick City Council shows the first three-months of work on the iconic $58M project which is creating 200 local construction jobs overseen by head builder ADCO.
“In some great news, our community’s new multipurpose sporting centre at Heffron Park is progressing well. We’ve overcome some challenging conditions with COVID-19 and then La Niña weather pattern but in just few months the site is already taking shape. I can’t wait to welcome the community to their brand new sporting facility soon,” said Dylan Parker, Mayor of Randwick.
The $58 million dollar project will contain state-of-the-art facilities, including a new gymnastics centre, an indoor multipurpose sporting facility and a high-performance centre for the South Sydney Rabbitohs.
The project is a joint initiative of Randwick City Council and the South Sydney Rabbitohs with part funding provided by the NSW State Government ($11.8M) and Federal Government ($10M).
Heffron Centre construction update key facts (September 2021 – January 2022):
- Construction is now more than 20% complete on the project.
- More than 1km of fencing has been installed including shade cloth, hoarding and informative signage for the community.
- More than 20,000 cubic metres of fill material has been excavated and reused throughout the site.
- More than 150 foundation piles have been installed across the building footprint, which will be used to support goal posts and flood lighting on the playing field.
- Four out of eight concrete slabs have been poured, using 130 concrete trucks to complete the job.
The Heffron Centre is being built by head builder ADCO and will be fully owned by Randwick City Council with lease arrangements in place to the South Sydney Rabbitohs and to Belgravia Leisure to operate the indoor sports centre and gymnastics centre.
The centre is expected to open in late 2022 and in time for the 2023 NRL season.
