Randwick Council announces school pedestrian safety improvement blitz

Wombats are invading Randwick City – wombat crossings that is.
Pedestrian safety will be improved at 29 locations across Randwick City with the construction of new raised crossings known as ‘wombat’ crossings and pedestrian refuge islands as well as the installation of new traffic signals at a known collision blackspot in Randwick City.
The projects will be undertaken throughout 2021 and 2022 as part of a $4.375M grant recently awarded to Council under the Federal Stimulus Road Safety Program School Zones project.
Randwick Mayor Danny Said explained the works will improve safety for residents, school children and motorists.
“I’m very pleased that Council has been able to secure these funds to deliver some important safety improvements near local schools.
“Wombat crossings are like zebra crossings but are built upon a raised platform. This makes them more conspicuous and reduces the speed of vehicles traversing the crossing. Research has shown that wombat crossings substantially lower the potential for fatal or serious injuries to pedestrians.
“We’ll also be building more pedestrian refuge islands which provide a safer location for pedestrians to wait for a gap in traffic while crossing wider or busy roads,” explains Mayor Said.
Nearby residents and schools will be notified about the dates for the upcoming works.
