Council logo & seal

The seal

Randwick's original seal, dating from 1859, the year of Randwick's incorporation as a Municipality, was replaced on 15 November 1938 with the new common seal.

Dividing the centre of the seal is a cross, with stars and lion from the official coat of arms of NSW, indicating that Randwick is in the State of NSW
Top left quarter: Spade and Pick representing industry and progress within the Municipality.

Top right quarter: The Endeavour representing the municipality's association with Captain Cook, who landed at Botany Bay, on Randwick's southern boundary, in 1770.

Lower left quarter: Wriggle lines of heraldic waves symbolise Randwick's popular surfing beaches and extensive ocean frontage.

Lower right quarter: Spur and Strap signifies Randwick's world renowned connection with horse racing as well as the general sporting activity throughout the district.

The motto

Semper prima, the Latin inscription meaning 'Always first', was the motto suggested in 1859 when Randwick became the first Municipal Council to be established in the Sydney metropolitan area.

The logo

In the Randwick City Council logo, the blue wave represents our unique coastline and Council's efforts to protect the natural environment. The yellow wave identifies Council's work in making the coastal environment accessible to the community, through such works as the coastal walkway and the Coogee and Maroubra Plans of Management. The green wave symbolises the urban environment and Council's commitment to ensuring a complementary relationship between our natural and urban environments.

The three waves run parallel, representing balance and serving to underline our commitment to teamwork and to fostering a cooperative partnership with our community. The colours represent the ocean, beaches and parks of Randwick City.

The words in the logo highlight Council's role, to foster, develop and maintain a real sense of community within the City. The logo is a registered trademark of the Council.
