There's so much more that can go in your FOGO bin!

NOTE: This news article was accurate at the time it was posted. Visit FOGO to see the latest information.

FOGO might take a bit of getting used to, but once you make the switch, most people say they become much more aware of their waste habits and begin recycling even more. For many people, once you remove the food scraps from the red bin, the only thing left is soft plastics. Soft plastics can be recycled, but they can't be put in your yellow bin. You can drop them at the Randwick Recycle Centre or at your local supermarket or you can use Recycle Smart and someone will collect them from you.

Yet FOGO is a lot more than just food scraps and green waste from your garden. Here's 10 things maybe you didn't know could go in FOGO.

1) Cardboard boxes
Plain cardboard boxes can be ripped up and put in your FOGO bin. This will leave more room in your yellow, bin too. Remember plastics can't go in FOGO, so rip off any excess tape or labels before putting the boxes in FOGO.

2) Egg cartons and pizza boxes
Cardboard egg cartons and dirty pizza boxes can be tossed straight into your FOGO bin. No need to clean your pizza box like you do if you're putting it in the yellow bin - FOGO can take a pizza box with food scraps still stuck on it.

3) Pet poo
If you're picking up after your pets in your back yard or while you're on a walk, as long as the poo is picked up and tied up in a compostable FOGO bag, then you can just toss it in your FOGO bin. Compostable kitty litter can be thrown in FOGO too.

4) Seafood shells
Summer is coming and hopefully that means indulging with some lovely fresh Aussie seafood. Wrap your prawn shells up in newspaper and toss them straight into FOGO. Fish bones, crab shells, muscles and any other seafood scraps can also go in FOGO.

5) Bones!
Thinking of getting a ham for Christmas? Once you've finished, just put the left over leg in FOGO. Any bones, chicken carcass or fat gristle can all go in FOGO.

6) Tissues and paper towels
No need to feel guilty about using  paper towels around the house anymore! You can just toss them in FOGO and they'll be turned into compost. The same goes for tissues - just toss in FOGO.

7) Tea bags, tea leaves, coffee grinds
Don't let your morning cuppa end up in the red bin. Most teabags can be tossed right into the FOGO bin. As long as you're using the regular paper kind, and not the more modern triangle type, which might contain some plastics. Tea leaves and coffee grinds are perfect for FOGO, too.

8) Toilet paper rolls
Plain cardboard rolls from toilet paper, paper towels or wrapping paper can all go in your FOGO bin.

9) Oil and fat
If you're cleaning your BBQ or have old oil from deep frying, you can put it in FOGO. Do you have old condiments in the fridge or pantry? Empty them in FOGO and recycle the containers.

10) Hair - pet or human
Might sound a little odd, but hair can be tossed in your FOGO bin. Beard trimming, cat brushing and cleaning out your hair brush - toss it all in your  FOGO bin.

Once you start using your FOGO bin more and more, you'll realise how much you can put in it. You'll also take more notice of what's left in  your red bin and might even start to recycle that. The more we can do to prevent items from ending up in landfill, the better. Thanks for doing your part and being a FOGO fan!
