South Maroubra Beach was one of many swimming spots upgraded to a 'Very Good' rating.

Coming into summer, visitors to Randwick City beaches can swim with confidence knowing that the majority of Randwick City beaches have been graded as ‘Good’ or ‘Very Good’, indicating they are suitable for swimming most of the time.

The annual State of the Beaches report, released yesterday from the NSW Government, provides an overview of water quality at 210 swimming locations across the state that are monitored under the Beachwatch and Beachwatch Partnership programs, across NSW.

In Randwick City, the monitored swimming spots include Clovelly Beach, Gordons Bay, Coogee Beach, Maroubra Beach, South Maroubra Beach, South Maroubra Rockpool, Malabar Beach, Little Bay Beach, Yarra Bay, Frenchmans Bay and Congwong Bay.

Gordons Bay, Maroubra Beach, South Maroubra Beach all upgraded their rating this year, to receiving a Very Good rating. While, Malabar upgraded to a Good rating. Clovelly, Coogee, South Maroubra Rockpool, Little Bay Beach, Yarra Bay and Congwong Bay all maintained their Good rating.

The annual rating at Frenchmans Bay however was downgraded to a Poor. The grade is based on an analysis of water samples that are taken throughout the previous year.

The main driver of pollution in recreational areas is rainfall. Rain flows through our stormwater system and brings with it leaves, dirt and debris as it discharges into the waterways.

To counteract this, Randwick Council has recently installed a gross pollutant trap (GPT) at the stormwater drain that releases into Frenchmans Bay. This GPT will collect any large debris and prevent it from running off into the bay, improving the overall water quality.
