Traffic on Bunnerong Road, La Perouse

Roads leading to popular eastern suburbs beaches at Little Bay and La Perouse could be temporarily closed this weekend (18 and 19 December 2021) if roads become too congested with beachgoers.

Thousands of people are expected to hit the beach this weekend with the temperature forecast to hit the mid 30s after a wet start to summer.

Both Little Bay and La Perouse are popular with beachgoers, but there is limited parking and generally only one way in and one way out for motorists. On hot summer days in 2020 there were kilometre long queues of cars on Bunnerong Road and Foreshore Drive trying to get to the eastern suburbs beaches.

Randwick City Council will have traffic control marshals in place between 8am and 5pm on Saturday and Sunday at key locations.

Roads will be closed and vehicles redirected if traffic congestion starts to occur and car parking is full. Roads will be reopened once the traffic congestion eases.

Only local residents, emergency and council vehicles, buses, ride share and delivery drivers and people with confirmed restaurant bookings will be permitted entry if the roads are closed.

At Maroubra Beach, Council will open Broadarrow Reserve for overflow car parking and the pedestrian crossing on Marine Parade will be managed by traffic controllers to help reduce congestion.

The measures are part of Randwick City Council’s summer COVID response plan to minimise the impact on the local community.

Updates will be provided on Randwick City Council’s social media channels over the weekend and VMS signage will alert motorists on the day.

Locations where roads will be temporarily closed should heavy traffic congestion occur.
