The popular temporary pedal parks installed by Randwick Council at Clovelly Beach car park and Chifley Sports Reserve car park at the start of June this year will remain in place until Monday 5 October 2021, Randwick Mayor Danny Said announced today.

Originally planned to be dismantled at the end of winter, the extension will allow more time for kids to have fun and exercise safely outdoors as the Sydney lockdown and home schooling continues.

“Throughout the pandemic, and particularly during lockdowns, Council has looked for various ways to help lighten people’s burden where we can and provide additional ways for residents to make use of our outdoor spaces,” Mayor Danny Said explained.

“The pop-up pedal parks have proven to be a popular and effective way for kids to get outside, burn off some energy in a safe environment and feel like life is a little bit normal again. It was a no-brainer to keep them open for longer than was originally planned. The positive feedback we’ve received from the community tells us that this is a valued initiative that brings relief and happiness to many families.”

During the first lockdown in early 2020, beachside car parks were closed, providing local families with the opportunity to turn them into temporary bike tracks and play spaces for children. When beachside car parks reopened on 13 May 2020, Council received requests from residents to consider providing continued community access to car parks throughout winter.

In June 2020, Council started a three-month trial of pedal parks at Clovelly Beach and Chifley Reserve, which proved to be very popular with the community.

In May 2021 Council voted for the pedal parks to return each winter. This year ramps, rails and tunnels were installed to provide additional skill-building opportunities for junior cyclists, skaters and scooter users. Residents are encouraged to provide feedback about the pop-up pedal parks to help inform Council’s approach for 2022.
