Randwick Council will celebrate the lead up to the 41st annual Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival with a ceremony to raise the rainbow flag out the front of the Randwick City Council administration centre on Frances Street on Friday 22 February at 2pm.

The ceremony is open to the public and will be capped off with free ice cream to celebrate. It will be attended by Randwick Mayor Kathy Neilson, representatives from Mardi Gras, local politicians and Randwick Councillors. The flag will fly proudly until the end of the Mardi Gras festival on Sunday 3 March 2019.

“I’m so glad to see change happening within the wider community and hope that by proudly flying the rainbow flag, we encourage advocates to be fearless as they continue to campaign for LGBTQI rights,” said Randwick Mayor Kathy Neilson.

“Randwick Council is committed to equality, diversity and inclusiveness. By flying the rainbow flag each and every year in the lead up to and during Mardi Gras, we hope the LGBTQI community knows that they have our full support.”

The rainbow flag originated in San Francisco in 1978 and was designed by artist Gilbert Baker for the Californian city's Gay and Lesbian Freedom Day Parade. Since then it has become a worldwide emblem of gay pride.
