Coogee Bay Road Streetscape Upgrade

Work to underground power, widen footpaths and plant more street trees on Coogee Bay Road will recommence on Monday 4 March 2019, Randwick Mayor Kathy Neilson announced today.

The $5M major streetscape upgrade commenced in September 2018, but paused over summer to help give local retailers a break over the peak period.

“This is a long-awaited and important upgrade to an iconic town centre,” Mayor Neilson said. “The outcome will be a more attractive and inviting town centre, with more space for people to gather and socialise, uniform paving and more street trees.

“As with any streetscape upgrade, the construction process inevitably involves noise, dust and some disturbance to residents, businesses and visitors. We are working hard to keep this inconvenience to a minimum by working on a section at a time and employing a dedicated liaison officer providing a direct link for affected businesses and residents with the construction contractor.

“The end result will see a better town centre, with parking remaining on both sides of the street and the road remaining two-way,” Mayor Neilson said.

As part of the upgrade, overhead powerlines and poles will be removed and put underground. The work also involves the installation of impact-rated bollards and street furniture as part of Council’s commitment to creating resilience in our community and protecting public places from the threat of terrorism.

Night works will take place intermittently throughout the course of the project, but noisy works such as jack-hammering and concrete-sawing will cease by 11pm. Residents and businesses will be directly notified prior to night works occurring. Traffic diversions will be implemented on Coogee Bay Road between Arden Street and Brook Street, which will limit traffic flow to a westerly direction throughout various stages. Work is expected to be complete by December 2019.
