10 things that happened at Randwick's Ordinary Council Meeting September 2018

Randwick Councillors met on Tuesday 25 September 2018 for an Ordinary Council Meeting. The following is summary of some of the items.
- New General Manager appointed Experienced local government executive Therese Manns (pictured) has been appointed as Randwick City Council’s new General Manager. Ms Manns will replace Randwick’s outgoing and highly regarded General Manager Ray Brownlee PSM who is leaving the Council at the end of this week to take up the role of CEO at Northern Beaches Council.
- Mobile phone towers Council is obtaining legal advice in an attempt to stop a TPG mobile phone tower proposed for Dundas St, Coogee.
- Smart City Strategy Council endorsed the Smart City Strategy, which outlines how Council will navigate the future and invest in smart city initiatives and technology. The document is now on public exhibition and open to feedback.
- Street names for Inglis development Yarraman Ave, Dillon St, Chiltern St, Fennelly St and White Lane are among the suggested names for new streets to be created as part of the Inglis redevelopment in Randwick. Yarraman (pronounced yarra-mun) is the indigenous word for horse.
- Permanent flying of Indigenous flag on Sydney Harbour Bridge Randwick Council has thrown its support behind a push to have the Indigenous flag flown permanently on the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Links to a petition of support will be promoted through Council’s communication channels.
- Conquer Coogee fitness event
Council is supporting a new fitness festival organised by Athletics Australia and the Coogee Surf Club at Coogee in April 2019 tentatively titled ‘Conquer Coogee’. The event will feature the steepest hill climb running event in Australia and raise money for the Royal Hospital for Women.
- Christmas street parties The tradition of Christmas street parties in Randwick will continue after Council agreed to arrange traffic management plans and traffic control measures including signage and equipment on behalf of residents during the months of November and December 2018.
- Trailer boat parking
Long-suffering residents affected by boat trailers parking for months and even years on end in residential streets are set to benefit from new laws to be introduced in Randwick City. Council Rangers will have new powers to impound boat trailers parking for long periods of time, however Council will only use the new powers in response to resident complaints.
- Smart speed bumps The possibility of implementing Smart Speed Bumps will be investigated and reported back to Council. Smart Speed Bumps use radar to track cars speed, creating a dip in the road to combat dangerous driving.
- Protecting native fauna
Randwick Council will form a working group to look at measures to protect native habitat and animals from domestic and feral cats. The group will look at a number of issues such as keeping cats inside at night, registration fees, fines, education and curbing feral cats.
