Randwick Mayor Lindsay Shurey says the wildfires raging in Greece over the past week have affected many within the Randwick City community.

“Our hearts are with the people of Greece who are suffering through a national tragedy that is all too familiar to many Australians,” Mayor Shurey said.

Latest reports are that more than 80 people have been killed in at least 15 separate fires in the south of Greece since Monday afternoon.

“Our thoughts go out to the Greek community within Australia, who will undoubtedly be greatly affected by the fires ripping through their country.

“Randwick City has a long association with the Greek island of Castellorizo and is home to a large Greek community.

“On behalf of Randwick Council and Councillors, I send my deepest condolences to the families who have lost loved ones, as the hard task of repairing, rebuilding and healing begins.

“Randwick Council has been in touch with the Greek Consulate in Sydney to offer our support and assistance.”
