Eight fig trees that were saved from being destroyed along Anzac Pde during light rail construction were replanted at Heffron Park, Maroubra this week.

Mayor Lindsay Shurey and Transport for NSW Coordinator General Marg Prendergast helped to replant the first of these trees, which will create a corridor along the Fitzgerald Ave side of Heffron Park.

“I’m pleased these trees have been protected, nurtured and returned to us for planting at Heffron Park. It’s right that the Randwick community can once again enjoy them,” said Randwick Mayor Lindsay Shurey.

“Residents and visitors to Heffron Park will now be able to enjoy both the environmental benefits and beautiful canopy these trees will bring to the park. They’ll improve the biodiversity of the area, reduce soil and water loss, provide shelter from the wind and shade from the sun.”

“These eight trees were moved from the light rail corridor and then grown to be healthy in a nursery in Peats Ridge until an ideal time to plant them in their home in Maroubra,” Marg Prendergast said.

More than 120 trees have been saved by being transplanted or retained after light rail plans were redesigned. Another 900 new trees will be planted along the light rail route.
