Rainbow flag raising

Randwick Council will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival with a ceremony to raise the rainbow flag and banners at Randwick Town Hall on Friday 23 February at 2pm.

The ceremony will be attended by Randwick Mayor Lindsay Shurey, Mardi Gras CEO Terese Casu and Creative Director Greg Clarke, and Randwick Councillors. The flag will fly proudly over Town Hall until the end of the Mardi Gras festival on Monday 5 March 2018.

“This year’s festival marks 40 years of passion, pride and protest for the LGBTQI community and continues to shine a light on the issues that affect them,” said Mayor Shurey. “The importance of promoting diversity, inclusion and equality is a year-round focus for Council, and we’re particularly excited to share the love during Mardi Gras.

“We also want to acknowledge the 78ers, whose first march in June 24 1978 was the bedrock on which today’s Mardi Gras Festival was based. Together with current organisers they have built an event that celebrates and supports love in all its forms.”
