Randwick Mayor Lindsay Shurey, Councillors and staff were saddened to hear of the passing of former Mayor Bill Haigh at the age of 93 last week.

Educated at Malabar Public School and Randwick High School and trained as a fitter and turner, Mr Haigh was first elected to Council in 1956 and served two terms as Mayor from 1962 to 1968.

He remains the longest continuous serving Mayor of Randwick.

Mr Haigh was selected as the Labor candidate for Heffron's seat of Maroubra and entered state parliament in 1968, where he served for a further 15 years.

“Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with Bill’s family at this time,” said Mayor Shurey. “Bill was a people person, and was well-loved in his community. He has left behind a wonderful legacy.”
