Large groups of rowdy drinkers are being sent a clear message to stay away from Sydney’s beachside parks these summer holidays with Randwick City Council bringing in tighter alcohol restrictions.
Alcohol is now prohibited at Maroubra, Malabar, Clovelly and La Perouse beachside parks on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day and Australia Day.
The Council decision at its meeting on 28 November 2017 is in response to a request from NSW Police to reduce the potential for alcohol-fuelled antisocial behaviour in known hotspots.
The move follows the permanent ban of alcohol at all Coogee beachside parks following an out of control Christmas Day party in 2016.
“On Christmas Day last year, 15 tonnes of garbage were left strewn across Dunningham and Goldstein Reserves at Coogee Beach by thousands of revellers,” Randwick Mayor Lindsay Shurey said.
“There were numerous alcohol-related incidents that put the safety of ordinary beach goers at risk and drove others away. Our beachside parks are there for everyone to enjoy without fear of intimidation or harassment.
“I think families and beach goers will welcome this decision which increases safety and returns the beachside parks to the people of Sydney to enjoy peacefully,” Mayor Shurey said.
