Alcohol is now banned permanently at all Coogee beachside parks and reserves.

Randwick Councillors last night, 28 March 2017, resolved to make permanent the ban which has been in place since a backpacker party took place at the beach on Christmas Day.

Randwick Mayor Noel D'Souza said the Council has been working closely with the Eastern Beaches Local Area Command who support the ban.

"The past two months has given us the opportunity to speak with police, local residents, community groups and businesses.

“The public outrage to the impact on the parks and beach that occurred on Christmas Day 2016 has been quite phenomenal.

“We've reached a tipping point which is very hard to come back from. Even our local police are saying enough is enough. We need to return the beach and nearby parks to local families to enjoy peacefully and safely.

“It is disappointing we have to take such a strong stance, but we need to reassure the community that they can feel safe when visiting and enjoying the beach.

"Everyone is entitled to visit Coogee without feeling harassed or intimidated. Unfortunately, many people, including families, have been avoiding the area because of the anti-social behaviour," Mayor D'Souza said.

On average, NSW Police spend around six hours every day in the Coogee basin responding to complaints related to alcohol-related issues, which increases to eight hours each day with proactive patrolling.

The ban now brings the beach in line with similar restrictions at Bondi, Tamarama and Bronte beachside parks. Alcohol is already prohibited on the actual beaches.

The alcohol restrictions take effect immediately and will be enforced by police.
