The Randwick Ritz Cinema will host an additional two films as part of this year’s Sydney Film Festival, both of which won major prizes at the recent Cannes Film Festival. The new foreign language films are likely to hold great appeal for Randwick City’s multicultural population, says Randwick Mayor, Cr Noel D’Souza.

“The Festival’s focus on world films and independent voices is in line with Council’s desire to recognise and celebrate our diverse community. We’re more than happy to support an initiative that brings well-crafted stories from all over the world to our doorstep,” he said.

“The inclusion of the Ritz Cinema as a new venue for the Sydney Film Festival is a boon to the community and a boost for local economy.

“It is a much-loved venue in Randwick City, so it’s fitting to celebrate their 80th anniversary in such a bold and festive way. People have always come here to be transported by film, and their experience will be made so much richer thanks to the unique offerings of the Sydney Film Festival.

The iconic art deco cinema will present a program of features, family films and documentaries from 9-18 June.

There will be an Opening Night event on Friday 9 June, followed by the screening of Ali’s Wedding, an Australian film spoken in Farsi, Arabic and English. The film’s director, producer, screenwriter and stars will be in attendance, alongside invited guests and local celebrities.

The two new films are The Square, which won the Cannes Palme d’Or for the new film, and A Man of Integrity, which won the Cannes Un Certain Regard Prize.

Randwick City Council is a proud supporter of the Sydney Film Festival.
