Randwick Mayor Lindsay Shurey has voiced Council’s opposition to the planned privatisation of Inner West bus services, in a letter sent to NSW Transport Minister Andrew Constance.

The State Government has plans to put out to public tender bus region six, covering suburbs from Kensington in the city's south-east to Strathfield and Olympic Park in the west.

“Council’s concern stems from evidence we have seen in previous instances where transport services have been privatised and then failed to adequately serve the community,” said Mayor Shurey. “In these cases, routes were cancelled and stops closed, leaving residents with pitiful few transport options.

“Put simply, privatising infrastructure does not always lead to success. I cannot have my residents left vulnerable and stranded.

“Public transport is an essential service that connects people to their families, their places of work and their community, and as such should not be commodified.

“I believe the residents of Kingsford deserve a better service and I’ll make it clear to the state government that investing in transport services is the answer.”
